“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
Do you have desires deep in your heart that go unmet? Do you possess deep longings that haven’t been fulfilled? The Bible gives us explicit instructions on how to fulfill all the desires of our hearts. Yet, so many still look outside the Word of God for encouragement and direction. I find myself often filled with grief for those who seek the world for lasting joy and peace. With so many references to choose from, no one should find themselves in pits of discouragement wondering what to do. The Word of God is clear: “Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord and He will give you your heart’s desire. Commit everything you do to the Lord, Trust Him and He will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. Be still in the presence of the Lord and wait patiently for Him to act. Don’t worry about the evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes” (Psalm 37:1-7). In other words, take delight in who God is and what He has done for you, and He will literally take care of the rest!
The Word goes on to say in verse 8: “Stop being angry. Turn from your rage. Do not lose your temper. It only leads to harm. For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the Lord will possess the land.” We would get a lot more accomplished in life if we would turn from our anger and frustration and take delight in all the blessings God has bestowed on us. When others look at you, do they want to be more like you? If not, it’s a good sign that you do not delight enough in the Lord and are subsequently not living out who you were designed to be in Him.
God has said, “If you will take care of your delight, I will take care of your desires. But do so with joy. Delight yourself in the Lord. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Pray and ask God to place a joy for Him down deep in your soul.
