“And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep.” Genesis 28:11
I am a firm believer that every word in the Bible has significance for us at some point in our lives. I think God uses the stories of the men and women in very dynamic ways to speak to us at the very time we need to hear Him. Such is the case for Genesis 28:11. So often we read this passage of scripture learning only about the dream Jacob had, and the ladder that reached to heaven. Recently, God shared a very personal and important message with me in that very scripture that I pray will prove useful and encouraging for you. In verse eleven we are told that Jacob uses a stone as a pillow for a very important reason. Sometimes you and I are called to lay down and surrender in very tough spots. Yet, it is when we are in these hard places that God can speak to us and we can truly hear Him. Let us not forget that Jacob was fleeing for his life at this point. His brother was out to kill him. When he placed that stone under his head that evening as the sun was setting, he found himself literally and figuratively in a very tough spot. Yet, as he lay down to rest, God was able to speak to him. And the message our Lord shared with Jacob all those years ago, is a message that is still just as relevant and personal for you and I today.
Are you in a tough spot financially? Spiritually? Emotionally? Listen to what God said to Jacob, “I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac: the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants…….Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go.” Genesis 28: 13, 15.
Friend, no matter where you are required to lay your head down today, know this; the God of Jacob and Abraham is the same God you and I serve today. He has mighty and wonderful plans for your future and He will never leave or forsake you. He will keep you wherever you go. The tough spot you are in right now is prime location for God to speak to your heart!
